Things to Do Around Coeur d’Alene
Christmas is next week! Are you frantically preparing for your holiday, or are you relaxing in the glow of having finished early? There are still a lot of things to do, and some have nothing to do with the holiday. Take a look at the events we’ve rounded up for this week’s Things to Do newsletter.
Comedy
Friday & Saturday @ Spokane Comedy Club – The Olympia-based comic mines his family life for genuinely hilarious material. He won the Seattle International Comedy Competition and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta. He also appeared on Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and various other comedy outlets.
Friday @ Calypsos, Coeur d’Alene – Think you’ve got what it takes? Tell some jokes, share some laughs. Signups at 6, funnies start at 6:30.
Theater
A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play
Fri-Sun @ The Innovation Den, Coeur d’Alene – Before we spent our free time staring at our TV sets, American families got their entertainment from the living room radio. Coeur d’Alene Summer Theater is harkening back to that tradition this week, staging a live radio play of A Christmas Carol. As in the old days, it will feature just a few actors crowding around microphones to create the illusion of a sprawling cast of characters.
Friday @ The Kroc Center, Coeur d’Alene – Sometimes you need a little over-the-top entertainment to really get the holiday spirit moving. With a cast of 72 performers and 500 (!) costumes involved, there’s a lot going on. There are Rockettes-style kickline dances, a massive salute to the military, and a live Nativity scene. Santa’s workshop is involved, too. It takes some serious skills and work to get all that in one performance.
Music
Spokane Symphony Holiday Pops with Vanessa Williams
Sat. & Sun. @ Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, Spokane – Vanessa Williams stars in this season’s Spokane Symphony Holiday Pops, conducted by Music Director James Lowe. Vanessa sings selections from her two popular holiday albums, and other festive Christmas songs. Holiday Pops also features traditional carol singing and an appearance by Santa Claus.
Blue Christmas with Sammy Eubanks
Saturday @ The Knitting Factory, Spokane – Spokane blues guitarist Sammy Eubanks has been a local institution for years. Anyone who has paid even cursory attention to our music scene has seen him shred at least once. He tours the country pretty regularly, but we always relish a hometown concert. His now-annual Christmas concert is one you won’t want to miss.
Saturday @ Coeur d’Alene Public Library – Members of the symphony orchestra play classical music in a program just right for children. After the short program, children can get up close and personal with musicians to find out what it is like to play an instrument. This is a free, family-friendly program.
Sports/Outdoors
Sundays @ Riverfront Park, Spokane – Learn to skate at weekly ice skating lessons at the Numerica Skate Ribbon! Your skate rentals are included. Registration is available on-site and lessons are on a first come, first served basis.
Hiking – The snow has melted away, so don’t be afraid to hit the trails. Join us in our 66 Day Challenge to get active and find a trail this weekend! We’ll be posting about our adventure next week. Stay tuned.
